Notes from a train window

A journey can be part of the destination. From a train window, colours and patterns arrive too quickly to catalogue perfectly. Record a few impressions instead: a stretch of trees, a station roof or a change in the light. Avoid identifying a place with confidence when you have not checked its name.

Before travelling, confirm the route, reservation rules and arrival arrangements with the operator. Keep valuables close and make space for other passengers. A quiet journal is a way to enjoy the journey without turning the carriage into a performance or disturbing people who are simply commuting.

Notebook exercise

Take ten minutes to record one detail from your own day. Include the date and setting, then leave the page open for a later observation. Keep any private information out of a version you share.
